In brief

North Korea's ambassador has revealed the nation is taking care of Russian soldiers injured in the Ukraine war and housing Russian orphans, showcasing the strengthening alliance between the two countries amidst the ongoing conflict.

North Korea is stepping up its support for Russia as the conflict in Ukraine continues. Recently, Alexander Matsegora, the Russian ambassador to North Korea, confirmed that North Korea is caring for hundreds of wounded Russian soldiers and housing children who lost their parents due to the war. This arrangement reflects a revival of their Cold War-era camaraderie, which has strengthened since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine three years ago. Matsegora, in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta, noted the presence of both the injured troops and orphans in North Korea, emphasizing that these humanitarian efforts are conducted free of charge. The ambassador mentioned that the rehabilitation of soldiers is taking place at Korean sanitariums and clinics. Last year, North Korea also received Russian children whose fathers died in the war, housing them at a recreation center in Wonsan. However, no further details were provided about the duration of their stay or the specific conditions of care. As the conflict escalates, North Korea's involvement showcases the growing ties and mutual support between the two nations.
