PARIS (AP) — French President Emmanuel Macron likes to say that he can get President Donald Trump on the phone any time he wants. In New York for the U.N. General Assembly, he proved it.
Blocked by police on Monday night while attempting to cross a New York street for a vital diplomatic meeting, Macron fished out his phone and called his U.S. counterpart.
“How are you?” Macron said. “Guess what? I’m waiting in the street because everything is frozen for you!”
French media confirmed that Trump was indeed on the line, marking a unique moment of spontaneous diplomacy.
While waiting, he explained to the police how he was trying to reach France’s diplomatic mission after delivering a speech at the United Nations, where he announced France's recognition of Palestinian statehood.
“I have 10 people with me,” Macron mentioned while negotiating his way through the block.
“I’m sorry President, I’m really sorry,” the officer replied, acknowledging the unusual situation.
Taking advantage of the moment, Macron also discussed other geopolitical issues, stating, “I would love to have a discussion with Qatar about Gaza.”
Once the street reopened, Macron was able to continue on his way, emphasizing the importance of global conversation even amidst logistical hiccups.
