At least 11 people were killed in a mass shooting at a residential building near Durban, South Africa, in the KwaMakhutha township. The gunmen targeted a house that was hosting a party, opening fire on 14 guests. Among the victims were ten who died at the scene and three who were taken to hospital, one of whom later succumbed to injuries.
police said some victims were involved in illegal activities, remarks that were held back to protect ongoing investigations. While no clear motive had been confirmed, authorities could not exclude a feud between rival groups. The shooting also involved the arson of a victim’s vehicle before the gunmen fled.
South Africa’s murder rate remains one of the highest worldwide, with more than 60 deaths daily. Recent incidents, including the murder of nine women dumped on roadways, have heightened public fear. Last year, a mass shooting at a Johannesburg tavern left nine dead.
In light of rising street crime and gang turf wars involving drug trafficking and illegal mining, President Cyril Ramaphosa recently called organised crime the "most immediate threat to our democracy, society and economic development," pledging military support to police efforts. The current manhunt for the suspects continues amid growing concerns for public safety.
