Police confirmed that a 17‑year‑old girl was killed when a sword was wielded at Brinell School in Fagersta, Sweden.


Two other students, aged 12 and 17, sustained serious injuries, while a third person was lightly wounded.


A 18‑year‑old male suspect, not yet named, was arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder. He reportedly wore a helmet and is believed to be a former student.


The police said they fired shots at the scene but did not confirm whether the suspect was hit before arrest.


The attack prompted a regional state of emergency, lifted the next day. Brinell School has about 500 students and is located 170km from Stockholm.


Investigators carried out two house searches in connection with the suspect.


Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the incident as a serious one on X, while King Carl XVI Gustaf expressed dismay and sadness.
