In brief

North Korea and Russia have initiated the construction of their first road bridge, symbolizing an enhanced bilateral relationship, as North Korean troops and weapons support Russia in its war against Ukraine.

North Korea and Russia are taking a significant step towards deeper connections by commencing construction on their first-ever road bridge across the Tumen River. This new bridge will link the two countries and comes as they strengthen their ties, particularly following North Korea's troop deployments and military aid to support Russia's efforts in Ukraine.A groundbreaking ceremony for the two-lane road bridge took place on Wednesday, with officials from both nations participating via video call. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin highlighted this as a major milestone in relations, while North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's administration touted it as a "historic monument" to their partnership. The bridge will measure slightly over half a mile and its construction is expected to wrap up within 18 months. Once finished, it will enhance passenger and commercial traffic, as well as tourism to the region. The improving relations between North Korea and Russia had faced challenges during the post-Cold War years. However, this new collaboration has grown stronger since 2023, when North Korea began supplying artillery and missiles to Russia. This stronger bond was solidified during President Putin's visit to Pyongyang, where they agreed on a strategy for mutual defense and various cooperation efforts.North Korea's military involvement has seen approximately 15,000 troops sent to assist Russian forces, with casualties reported. In return, Russia has provided North Korea with advanced military technology and brought in North Korean workers, which aids Kim's government financially.Recent developments, including North Korea's unveiling of a new destroyer equipped with sophisticated weaponry reportedly built with Russian assistance, further signal the deepening military ties between the two countries.
