When the Ocean Melody caught fire at a Qingdao shipyard at 11:15 local time on 31 August, 25 people lost their lives. Of the 42 people on board, 17 were evacuated and 5 doctors put the survivors in stable condition.

The blaze started during maintenance and was extinguished just over three hours later, according to CCTV.

Chinese officials, including President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang, ordered an "all‑out" search and rescue operation to clear the ship and prevent secondary disasters.

Qingdao, one of the world’s busiest ports, has seen safety troubles after a September 2026 explosion that killed a worker and injured 12 others in the southeast province of Fujian.

The incident has intensified calls for stricter maritime safety standards for foreign‑flagged vessels operating in China’s ports.
