In brief

Denmark's government confronts U.S. over reported spying activities, amid historical tensions regarding Greenland's status.

The Danish government is expressing serious concerns after it summoned the American ambassador, following allegations that the Trump administration has intensified its surveillance efforts in Greenland. Lars Lokke Rasmussen, Denmark’s foreign minister, stated, “It’s deeply concerning if the U.S. is indeed trying to gather intelligence in Denmark and Greenland, especially if the aim is to drive wedges between us. We don’t spy on friends.”Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, has been a topic of interest for President Trump, who has previously indicated a desire to acquire the island. In a recent interview, he reiterated that Greenland is vital for U.S. national security and hinted at not ruling out military action to secure it. “I’m not saying I’m going to do it, but I don’t rule out anything,” he added, assuring that the island’s residents would be well looked after. However, a recent poll shows that most Greenlanders are opposed to joining the United States. The situation escalated following Vice President JD Vance's visit in March, which reportedly had a negative reaction, distancing residents further from the idea of U.S. involvement.
