Former Interpol official Vitalie Pirlog has been arrested in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after France issued an alert for his detention. Pirlog, who led a key commission at Interpol, is being investigated for his involvement in a corrupt scheme that allowed wanted fugitives to have red notices—a mechanism used for arrest—erased in exchange for bribes.
The UAE's ministry of interior confirmed that Pirlog was detained over the weekend, facing serious charges including forgery and fraud. His lawyer in Moldova has yet to comment, while an Interpol spokesperson noted that the case rests in the hands of UAE authorities.
Between 2017 and 2022, Pirlog oversaw the commission at Interpol's headquarters in Lyon, which was responsible for evaluating red notices. After leaving his post, he moved to Dubai and has since been linked to a scandal investigating how numerous fugitive criminals managed to escape arrest alerts, raising serious questions about potential corruption within Interpol's ranks.
