In a swift reaction to alarming child abuse allegations, G8 Education, a top Australian childcare provider, has announced plans to speed up the installation of CCTV in over 400 of its centers. The move comes after 26-year-old Joshua Dale Brown was charged with over 70 offenses, including child rape, involving multiple children at a Melbourne center from 2022 to 2023.
In addition to the surveillance, G8 Education will empower parents and caregivers to choose who can change their children's nappies and assist them in the restroom. The company's managing director, Pejman Okhovat, expressed concern over the disturbing accusations and pledged support to affected families and team members.
The accelerated CCTV rollout follows a trial in select locations, although specific timelines have not been disclosed. A company spokesperson emphasized a commitment to transparency and adherence to privacy laws amid growing scrutiny on child safety standards. However, child safety experts warn that the effectiveness of CCTV depends significantly on how it is managed. Concerns have been raised regarding false security, with experts suggesting that improved employee ratios and thorough hiring practices might be more effective.
Brown, who worked at numerous childcare centers since 2017, has prompted health authorities to recommend infectious disease testing for 1,200 children previously under his care. As investigations continue, this case has triggered government pledges for stricter regulations and checks within the childcare sector. Brown is currently awaiting his court appearance in September.
