In brief

Over 18 lives have been lost, and thousands evacuated as wildfires ravage the southeast of South Korea, damaging ancient sites and displacing residents amidst a fire-fighting battle fueled by extreme weather.

South Korea's southeast is witnessing one of the worst wildfire crises in its history, with at least 18 fatalities reported over the past six days, as relentless flames engulf towns and historical sites alike. The recent fires were fueled by dry conditions and high winds, igniting chaos in Andong City where over 200 buildings, including two ancient Buddhist temples, have faced destruction. As firefighters struggle against the flames, more than 27,000 residents have fled their homes, comprising even around 500 prison inmates relocated from the region. Witnesses describe the wildfires as an uncontrollable force, intensifying the urgency for rescue efforts. The fires, which began on Friday, have ravaged about 43,000 acres of land, with swollen blazes reported to have breached expectations of containment, according to acting President Han Duck-soo. Many victims are in their later years, highlighting the fires' toll on the most vulnerable. Images from the scene depict a dramatic fight against the flames, with local authorities mobilizing as much support as possible amidst challenging conditions. Despite some progress in controlling major blazes, firefighters faced set-backs from severe winds that impeded aerial assistance. Originating from reported mishaps - possibly involving a lawn mower - the fires quickly spread, prompting surrounding communities and emergency services to react fast. Following massive evacuations and infrastructure damages, the community is left coming to terms with the profound loss of both life and heritage in the wake of this environmental disaster.
