In brief
A U.S. Air Force veteran has been freed from Venezuelan jail, raising questions over the complexities of U.S.-Venezuela diplomacy.
Joseph St. Clair, an Air Force veteran, has been released from detention in Venezuela, according to his family. The circumstances of his release remain uncertain, and it's still unclear where he is now or if he has reunited with his family. This marks the second release of Americans from Venezuela during the Trump administration. Earlier in January, six American detainees were freed, following a high-profile visit by U.S. Special Envoy Richard Grenell to meet Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. The meeting stirred controversy as some criticized it for seemingly endorsing a leader accused of election fraud and human rights violations. Nonetheless, supporters argue the priority should be on bringing detained Americans home. St. Clair, who completed four tours in Afghanistan, had traveled to Costa Rica for PTSD treatment before ending up in Venezuela, which took his family by surprise.
