In brief
Maryland has successfully protected nearly 30% of its land ahead of schedule, paving the way for more ambitious conservations efforts.
Maryland is making waves in environmental conservation! The state has achieved a remarkable feat by safeguarding almost 1.9 million acres, reaching a goal of 30% land protection six years ahead of the 2030 target set by the “30 by 30” initiative, which aims for global conservation of land and water. This protected land includes a variety of beautiful spaces, from lush forests like the sprawling Green Ridge State Forest to serene shores and vital farmland around key sites, like the Naval Air Station Patuxent River. Notably, the Chesapeake Forest Lands span around 75,000 acres and are home to endangered species like bald eagles and the Delmarva fox squirrel. With this milestone reached, Maryland’s Governor Wes Moore has announced that the state is setting its sights even higher—a new target of conserving 40% of its land by 2040! Each area protected not only keeps ecosystems safe but also supports diverse wildlife and improves water quality, ensuring a healthier environment for everyone. Maryland is showcasing how proactive policies can greatly benefit both nature and communities, serving as a model for states to follow. Keep an eye out for more states joining this critical conservation movement!
