In brief
The implications of Trump's plan to declare Gaza a U.S. territory may spell disaster for the long-sought goal of Palestinian independence.
The proposed initiative by President Trump to take control of Gaza and create a U.S. territory has sent shockwaves through the Middle East. Traditionally, the two-state solution aimed for the coexistence of an Israeli and a Palestinian state, yet Trump's approach may completely dismantle this vision. Under Trump’s plan, Gaza would not belong to Palestinians and would instead be marketed as a “Riviera of the Middle East”, allowing anyone to move there. The trajectory for a Palestinian state had been diminishing, particularly after the deadly Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which led to escalating violence in the region. Polls reveal that neither Israelis nor Palestinians currently see a viable two-state solution. Despite this, international powers, including the U.S. and Saudi Arabia, have maintained support for Palestinian statehood in negotiations. Critics, such as Jeremy Ben-Ami from J Street, argue that Trump's proposal could hinder rather than help the peace process. "There’s no way forward to a deal,” he asserts, indicating that the plan may only complicate an already fragile situation further.
