In brief

The declaration emphasizes the brutal realities of Sudan's civil war, as the U.S. calls for international attention and action.

In a shocking update on January 7, 2025, U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken announced the occurrence of genocide in Sudan, attributing heinous acts to the Rapid Support Forces (R.S.F.) amid the ongoing civil conflict. The R.S.F., alongside allied militias, allegedly committed horrific atrocities, including massacres and sexual violence against specific ethnic groups in the Darfur region. To enforce accountability, the U.S. Treasury sanctioned R.S.F.'s leader, Gen. Mohamed Hamdan, and several companies in the United Arab Emirates, aimed at crippling the financial support for these militias. "The R.S.F. has systematically murdered men, boys, and even infants for their ethnicity and targeted women and girls for sexual violence," stated Blinken, highlighting the deliberate targeting of fleeing civilians who are trying to escape the violence. This plea for global awareness comes two decades after a similar determination was made regarding the Janjaweed militias in 2004, indicating the prolonged nature of violence and injustice in the region. As the world watches, the question remains: how will international communities react to this call for change?
