Pope Advances Antoni Gaudí's Journey to Sainthood

The Vatican honors architect Antoni Gaudí for his exceptional virtues, taking a significant step toward canonization.

The Vatican has officially recognized Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí, known for his iconic Sagrada Familia basilica in Barcelona, as "venerable," marking an important milestone in his journey to sainthood. Pope Francis authorized this decree, acknowledging Gaudí’s “heroic virtues” and reigniting a decades-long effort to canonize the devout Catholic. The Archbishop of Barcelona hailed this news as a profound recognition not just of Gaudí's architectural genius but as an inspiring message that despite life's challenges, everyone has the potential for sainthood. Before achieving full sainthood, Gaudí must undergo beatification, which will require proof of a posthumous miracle attributed to him. Having passed away in 1926, Gaudí's work continues to be celebrated, with the Sagrada Familia, still under construction since 1883, standing as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
