In brief
Valerie's remarkable journey of survival and the intense rescue effort brings hope to pet owners everywhere.
Kangala Wildlife Rescue has made headlines after they found a miniature dachshund, Valerie, alive and well after she spent 529 days in the Australian wilderness! Valerie became lost during a camping trip in November 2022, when her owners, Georgia Gardner and Joshua Fishlock, briefly left her in a playpen while they went fishing. The mission to find Valerie was intense. Volunteers contributed over 1,000 hours and covered more than 5,000 kilometers in their search. They cleverly utilized a scent trail made from Ms. Gardner's t-shirt to lure the dog into a trap. After weeks of searching, the team finally succeeded in locating her and reported that she was fit and healthy.Kangala’s director, Lisa Karran, took special care when approaching Valerie once she was trapped, wearing garments that belonged to Ms. Gardner to calm the frightened pup. Initially, campers had spotted Valerie beneath a car right after she went missing but she fled into the bushland, which complicated the search.Local sightings of her distinctive pink collar gave the search team hope. Despite the long wait, the rescue team remained positive, with Ms. Gardner sharing her relief on social media. She encouraged pet owners experiencing similar situations to keep hope alive: "Sometimes good things happen to good people.” This encouraging story highlights the lengths people will go to reunite with their beloved pets!
