7 people nabbed for money‑bouquets in Accra

Seven women were arrested after police swooped on stalls that sold bouquets of folded Ghanaian cedi notes, a trend that celebrates weddings and birthdays. The Bank of Ghana says the display of money in this way breaches legal tender rules and is a form of misuse that can damage the currency’s value.
The suspects face potential fines or jail time, while the central bank urges everyone to treat the cedi with dignity. The crackdown follows a warning issued in July that such “money‑bouquet” activities would be treated as an offence. Authorities warn that anyone who helps produce or sells these bouquets could be prosecuted.
Similar restrictions on using national currencies for decorations have appeared in Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Botswana, as governments try to protect the integrity of their money.
