In brief
Tensions rise as Venezuela claims territory in Guyana, leading U.S. to signal potential military responses to defend Guyana’s sovereignty.
In a recent news conference in Georgetown, Guyana, Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a stern warning to Venezuela about the consequences of forceful actions regarding territorial claims against the resource-rich country of Guyana. The warning comes as Venezuela has intensified its claims over the Essequibo region, a disputed area that constitutes about two-thirds of Guyana's territory and includes profitable offshore oil sites operated by ExxonMobil. Rubio emphasized that the U.S. would oppose these “illegitimate” territorial claims made by what he termed a “narco-trafficking regime,” reassuring Guyanese President Irfaan Ali of America’s commitment to safeguarding their territorial integrity. While Rubio refrain from detailing specific U.S. military plans, he hinted at possible actions from the powerful U.S. Navy, indicating readiness to confront any aggression from Venezuela. President Ali expressed appreciation for this support, highlighting the importance of U.S. partnership in ensuring Guyana’s sovereignty.
