In brief
Authorities are investigating a knife attack at Hamburg's busy train station. A 39-year-old woman is detained as victims range from ages 19 to 85, with some in critical condition.
A violent knife attack on Friday evening at Hamburg’s central train station injured 18 people, with local police confirming that all victims are now in stable condition. The incident occurred during the busy rush hour, leading to panic and chaos at one of Germany's busiest transit hubs. According to updates from the Hamburg police, the victims, aged between 19 and 85, included four individuals who sustained life-threatening injuries and required hospitalization. Authorities believe the attacker, a 39-year-old woman, was experiencing mental distress at the time of the attack. She was apprehended by two commuters moments after the stabbing. The police emphasized that the suspect was neither under the influence of drugs nor alcohol during the incident and stated that the attack does not appear to be politically motivated. A decision on whether to admit her into a closed psychiatric facility is expected from a Hamburg judge on Saturday. Hamburg’s central train station, which sees over half a million passengers daily, has faced concerns regarding safety. The city established a weapons-free zone around the area years ago, allowing police to perform body searches and remove individuals who pose a risk.
