The Israeli military says its air force has carried out its 'most powerful strike' in Yemen in response to the Houthi movement's repeated drone and missile attacks on Israel.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that dozens of aircraft bombed targets belonging to the Houthis' security and intelligence services in the capital Sanaa. The health ministry under the Houthi government labeled the action as Israel's 'brutal crime', asserting that civilian facilities and residential buildings were struck, resulting in eight fatalities.
This airstrike followed a previous Houthi drone attack where 22 individuals were injured, two critically, in the Israeli Red Sea resort of Eilat. The Houthis have held much of north-western Yemen for a decade amid ongoing civil war. Following the outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Hamas last year, they increased attacks against Israel, claiming to stand in solidarity with the Palestinians.
Videos from Sanaa showed thick smoke rising from multiple sites in the wake of the Israeli strikes. The attack coincided with a scheduled speech by Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi, as reported by their state-run media outlet.
Health ministry spokesperson Dr. Anees al-Asbahi accused the IDF's actions of deliberately targeting civilian areas, labelling such actions as war crimes, and detailing that at least 142 people sustained injuries, with civilians among them. First responders were reported to be searching through rubble for additional casualties.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz remarked on social media that the country had 'delivered a powerful strike on numerous terror targets of the Houthi terror organization in Sanaa'. The strikes purportedly decimated crucial command and military facilities belonging to the Houthis.
The IDF plans further actions against Houthi threats following this escalation, indicating an ongoing cycle of retaliatory violence in the region.
