In brief
The recent election saw Maia Sandu winning 54.9%, emphasizing unity and a strong commitment against external interference.
Maia Sandu, the president of Moldova, has successfully won re-election in a significant runoff vote against a rival she accused of being a “Moscow’s man.” This election is particularly noteworthy as it reflects Moldova’s geopolitical stance following a contested election in Georgia, which leaned towards Russia. With over 98% of votes counted, Sandu secured 54.9% compared to her rival's 45.3%. In her victory speech, Sandu expressed gratitude to Moldovans abroad, attributing her success to their participation. She declared, “Today you saved Moldova,” and highlighted the importance of this election for the country’s dignity and future. During her address, Sandu criticized external influences and labeled their attempts to undermine the election as an “attack unprecedented in Europe’s history.” European leaders celebrated her win, viewing it as a significant opposition to Russian interference, with Poland's Prime Minister emphasizing hopes for a continued shift towards pro-European sentiments in the region.
