In brief

As wildfires continue to rage near Jerusalem, Israeli officials are racing against time before stronger winds arrive. Evacuations are lifted, but the situation remains critical.

Firefighters in Israel are facing a tough challenge as they tackle wildfires raging on the outskirts of Jerusalem for the second day. The blazes are among the worst the country has seen in recent years, with officials eager to bring them under control ahead of expected strong winds later today. After partially controlling the fires, authorities reopened the main highway connecting Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, allowing evacuees to return home. However, Tal Volvovitch from the fire and rescue service cautioned that a shift in the wind could worsen the situation. The exact origin of the fires remains uncertain, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed that 18 people have been detained on suspicion of starting them, including one caught in the act. The combination of dry conditions, strong winds, and abundant shrubland has created a challenging environment for firefighting. Firefighting assistance from Croatia, Italy, and Cyprus is on the way, while the Palestinian Authority has offered help too, although joint efforts like previous years may not materialize this time. Meanwhile, a temporary ban on lighting fires in open areas is in effect until May 7, although Israelis are still allowed to barbecue in designated safe zones as they celebrate Independence Day, marking the country's foundation.
