In brief
Albufeira, a favorite tourist spot in Portugal, is cracking down on public nudity and swimwear, imposing fines of up to €1,500 for those who violate the new code.
Empty lineIn a bid to restore its reputation as a family-friendly destination, Albufeira has announced a new regulation that may put tourists on notice. Under the revised code of conduct, going shirtless or sporting bikinis away from the beach could lead to fines as steep as €1,500 (£1,250). This popular city in the Algarve region, a hotspot for British holidaymakers, is looking to enforce stricter rules on public decency after a viral incident involving eight British men dancing naked at a local bar last year. The recent code aims to maintain Albufeira’s image as a safe, multicultural destination, in line with similar regulations found in cities like Barcelona and Nice. In addition to swimwear restrictions, the new rules also prohibit public sexual acts. The proposal is currently being discussed and may be implemented by summer.
