While driving through the scenic route near the Great Smoky Mountains, a woman in North Carolina encountered a shocking incident when a bald eagle dropped a cat onto her windshield. The driver, who remains unnamed, reported the bizarre occurrence in a 911 call, saying, You may not believe me, but I just had a bald eagle drop a cat through my windshield. It absolutely shattered my windshield! She's apparently in shock, as one could imagine!
The incident occurred on U.S. Route 74 in Swain County, close to Bryson City. The dispatcher, chuckling at the unique situation, assured her that they had heard crazier stories before. Another witness also expressed astonishment at the unusual sight.
Wildlife experts revealed that this could be due to the eagle scavenging a dead cat or simply losing its grip. Kendrick Weeks, a wildlife supervisor, noted that while eagles can take prey of that size, they typically prefer something more palatable. He added that dropping prey is common behavior for these birds, especially if disturbed by other raptors.
This weird yet fascinating encounter highlights the ongoing natural wildlife interactions that remain present in regions like North Carolina, where bald eagles are thriving.
