What Happened?
A civilian‑contracted plane disappeared near Cape Newenham, a remote US Air Force radar site, killing all eight people on board.
The aircraft left Anchorage International Airport around 12:00 p.m. local time (20:00 GMT) and was bound for the Cape Newenham airfield, 450 miles (725 km) west by air.
Two U.S. Army Corps of Engineers employees were aboard, according to the Corps, and the remaining six passengers were described by the Air Force as "dedicated professionals carrying out a vital mission in a demanding environment".
Rescue teams reached the crash site and confirmed there were no survivors. An investigation is underway.
The Air Force has pledged intensive support for the families, friends and teammates of the victims, noting how "devastating" the loss is for the military community.
The Cape Newenham facility is part of the Alaska Radar System, a network of remote sites that monitor aircraft in Alaskan airspace.
The victims’ identities will be released once next‑of‑kin are informed.
