Amazon Cargo Plane Crash: Pilot Warned About Speed Before Fatal Overshoot
A Boeing 767-300 cargo jet delivered by Amazon Prime Air jumped the runway and crashed at Miami International Airport on 8 September, killing five crew members and injuring five others.
Flight‑data recorder footage released by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board shows a pilot repeatedly telling his co‑pilot about the airplane’s “excessive speed.” Despite this alert, the crew’s verbal responses were inconsistent, and an automated “sink‑rate” warning sounded during the final minutes.
The aircraft’s landing speed was recorded at 158 knots (292 km/h)—well above typical values for a Boeing 767 on approach—raising questions about cockpit decision‑making and speed control. The plane struck nearby vehicles, broke through a perimeter fence, and stopped 1,300 ft from the runway end.
Local authorities named the five fatalities as part of a cleaning crew inside a white Ford van at the crash site. Investigators are now examining the late flap deployment and other factors that may have contributed to the overrunning.
This incident underscores the importance of consistent cockpit communication, accurate speed monitoring, and adherence to safe landing procedures in preventing aviation accidents.
