Bangkok’s streets are now slick with water after over 48 hours of heavy rain. The city has officially declared a flood emergency, turning major roads into shallow rivers.
Officials warn residents, especially those near the city’s extensive canal network, to stay inside and move valuables to upper levels. Traffic chaos is already in full swing, with traffic lights stalling and vehicles wading through puddles.
The weather pour is forecast to last through Sunday, raising red flags that canals could overflow further. Thai Meteorological Service says the low‑pressure system may shift towards central Thailand but the flooding threat remains high.
All 50 Bangkok districts are now emergency zones. City governor Chadchart Sittipunt says the eastern districts are hardest hit, with drainage pumps working overtime to clear water.
Local shopkeeper Somkid Pheuk‑ngam, who lives by a canal, reports waist‑deep water and has kept his store closed for two days, fearing a repeat of the 2011 floods that killed hundreds across Thailand.
