In brief
The Old General statue, a longtime Nottingham landmark, returns this Christmas after a period of absence, reminding residents of their cherished holiday traditions.
In Nottingham, England, one statue has stood the test of time—quite literally! Known as the Old General, this six-foot tall statue, carved from limestone, stood in the window of a pub, watching over the city for over a century. Originally placed there during the 19th-century industrial boom, it saw Nottingham transform, filled with modern flats and corporations as traditional pubs closed down.Despite the changes around him, the Old General remained a beloved figure. Every Christmas, local residents would dress him as Santa Claus, turning his display window into a festive spectacle filled with twinkling lights and red velvet fabric—signaling the start of the holiday season for many.Nottingham local Steve Oliver shares, "It is a landmark. Something that’s ingrained in people’s memories." After disappearing for a while, the Old General is back in action, ready to spread Christmas cheer once again!
