26‑year‑old Vandenkerckhove, a former car salesman, is now a prince—though he will not receive a royal allowance or join the line of succession.
He told Het Nieuwsblad he’s proud of his family name, saying, 'I might want to use Saxe‑Coburg, but I’m proud of Vandenkerckhove. If I sacrifice that name, it’s a betrayal of everything my mother has done for me.'
Vandenkerckhove’s path to royalty began of all things in a shopping centre in 2013, where he met Prince Laurent unknowingly. He learned his royal connection when his mother revealed the truth at age 16.
