'Japanese officials have raided the country’s biggest beer makers over allegations they worked together to raise the price of their beverages.' The raid comes after media reports that the companies may have conspired to boost prices in April last year and again in October 2022.

The companies involved are Asahi, Kirin, Sapporo and Suntory. Asahi and Kirin confirmed that the Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) searched their premises and said they would fully cooperate with the investigation. Sapporo and Suntory were also visited, though they have yet to comment.

Investors reacted quickly: Asahi, Kirin and Sapporo saw their share price drop once the news broke. Suntory, which is not publicly listed, has not been affected in the markets.

All four firms cited rising raw‑material costs, energy and transportation as reasons for their announced price hikes. The JFTC believes there may have been a coordinated effort to set those prices, potentially breaching Japan’s Antimonopoly Act.

In statements, Kirin said it takes the matter "very seriously" and will cooperate fully with the JFTC, adding that it has not yet decided the impact on its financial results. Asahi said it was "subject to investigation by the JFTC regarding a suspected violation of the Act on Prohibition of Private Monopolization and Maintenance of Fair Trade" and pledged full cooperation.

The investigation is ongoing. The JFTC has not yet released a verdict, and all four companies have indicated they will push any material developments immediately to the public.
