Black Sea Ship Attacks: Sailors Missing and Bulgaria Demands Justice
At 03:00 local time a Al‑Shahid‑Hawking style drone attack hit a merchant ship in the Black Sea, sinking it in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone. The vessel, flying under the Togo flag, was found overturned with empty life‑jackets strewn around; the crew, five in total, remain missing.
A second grain‑laden ship, 18‑person crew (11 Turkish, seven Indian nationals) was also struck. Bulgarian forces rescued the crew, including two who suffered burns from an onboard fire. All survivors were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
Bulgarian President Rumen Radev condemned the attacks as a flagrant violation of maritime law and an “absolutely unacceptable” use of force inside national waters. He demanded a full investigation and threatened international sanctions if perpetrators remain unpunished.
Russia’s war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022, has surged in the Black Sea; Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Moscow of striking a civilian corn‑carrying vessel yesterday. Moscow has not yet released comments on the latest incidents.
The Black Sea’s maritime security remains precarious, with drone and missile threats escalating as both sides ramp up their campaigns. For crews and coastal communities, the stakes are life‑threatening and urgent calls for stronger enforcement of international naval law grow louder.
