Bombs preventing rescue of kidnapped youths, Nigerian police say
Police Commissioner Audu Bosso revealed that drones located a camp in Imo state where 19 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) recruits were being held by gunmen. However, the camp is believed to be mined with improvised explosive devices, preventing any immediate rescue.
The abducted youths were traveling from Ibadan to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states when a bus was attacked near Umunoha, Imo. Despite the police’s efforts, the exact location of the camp remains undisclosed, and the perpetrators have not been identified.
Denial of ransom impact – One victim’s father, Omotosho Adewale, said the kidnappers demanded 50 million naira, a sum he could not afford. He has not eaten for three days while pleading for governmental help.
The police have deployed bulldozers and armoured vehicles in preparation for a rescue, but the explosive threat makes operations high‑risk. Nigeria’s kidnapping crisis, especially for NYSC participants, remains a public safety priority with calls for stricter travel protocols.
The incident underscores that mass kidnappings in southeastern Nigeria are less known than in the north, yet they still threaten national unity and youth participation in the compulsory NYSC programme.
