Brits Flee Spain Wildfire, Friends Lose Their Lives

A holiday in Spain’s Bedar village turned into a nightmare when a massive wildfire swept through the area.

The British family—Lucinda Curtois, partner Riyaz Cheytan, and their two teens—escaped the fire, but the calamity claimed 12 lives in the village, including 4 Britons, and left 23 people missing.

They didn’t anticipate hitting a “wall of fire”, but soon discovered that close family friends had been killed by the flames.

“They left their home on foot…I think the road was cut off because they live out in the countryside.”

Their story highlights how quickly a holiday can turn into a survival challenge, and the everyday danger wildfires can pose to travelers.
