In brief

Six fatalities, including two children, were confirmed as the crew faces questioning.

The crew of a tourist submarine that sank in the Red Sea has been questioned following a tragic accident that left six out of 45 passengers dead. The incident occurred around 10:00 AM local time, while the Sindbad submarine was on a sightseeing tour near Hurghada, a popular resort known for its vibrant coral reefs. The rescued passengers included 39 individuals and five crew members, while nine people sustained injuries, with four in critical condition.Among the deceased were six tourists from Russia, including a tragic case of two married doctors whose daughters survived but are now hospitalized. The Sindbad submarine had been operational for years and was reported as certified by the local authorities. The Red Sea governor revealed that the submarine allegedly struck a reef and lost pressure at a depth of 20 meters (65 feet). Tourism, especially from Russia, has been crucial for Egypt's economy. However, recent incidents have raised alarm about the safety measures in place for tourist excursions. This is the second sinking in the Red Sea within six months, prompting calls for enhanced regulations and safety checks for local tour operators.
