Police in Evanston are investigating a disturbing incident involving a U.S. Border Patrol vehicle that escalated into violence after a crash. Footage shared on social media shows an agent repeatedly punching a man while he was pinned to the ground, provoking outrage from witnesses and community members.
The incident occurred when a sedan collided with the Border Patrol vehicle. Three individuals were arrested during the chaos, which saw onlookers attempting to intervene. The agents responded aggressively, using pepper spray and even drawing their weapons.
Response to federal immigration enforcement in the area has grown tense, particularly as local leaders speak out against these actions. Mayor Daniel Biss condemned the violent tactics, calling them an 'outrage,' and urged federal agents to leave the city.
Witnesses expressed their fear and frustration during the news conference, with one community member stating that the presence of ICE agents caused terror among residents.
The city has begun collecting evidence and creating “No ICE Zones” to protect residents from future incidents like this, indicating a rising movement against federal enforcement tactics in immigrant communities.
