Cult Leader Sentenced After Mysterious Death in New Zealand

A New Zealand court has booked Kaixiao Liu to more than 10 years in prison after the death of Shulai Wang, a 70‑year‑old woman who arrived from China in August 2023.

Wang was taken to Liu’s home, which he called “the Ark.” There she lived with other women, following strict rules that treated them as servants. They were referred to him as “Lord” or “Master,” and were expected to study scripture, care for Liu’s children, and tend a garden.

In March 2024, Wang tried to escape. The group caught her, restrained her, and later dumped her wrapped body in rice bags near a marina at Gulf Harbour. A fisherman found the remains days later.

Police traced the rice bags back to Liu, who had purchased large quantities of a specific brand. He was found guilty of manslaughter and kidnapping. Liu’s wife, Lanyue Xiao, also received a prison sentence for similar crimes.

Justice Mathew Downs noted that Liu showed “callous indifference” toward Wang, describing her death as lonely and frightening. Liu’s lawyer argued he was not a cult leader, but the judge disagreed.
