Sergei and Tatyana Voronkov had long been disenchanted with modern Russia when they chose to relocate to Ukraine. Following Moscow’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, the couple, both Russian citizens, decided to move in search of a peaceful life. Settling in Novolyubymivka, they adopted a quiet lifestyle complete with pets and farming. However, the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 shattered their tranquility.

As Russian rockets flew overhead, Tatyana decided to become an informant for Ukraine. They used Telegram to provide critical information about Russian military movements, believing their actions wouldn’t harm innocent civilians. “We didn’t think of it as treason,” Tatyana stated, highlighting their fight against what they perceived as evil. For two years, they worked diligently until Sergei was arrested by Russian security forces in April 2024 while shopping.

During his detention, Sergei endured torture and was pressured to confess to aiding Ukrainian forces. Eventually released, the couple suspected they were under surveillance and felt increasingly threatened. They plotted to escape, prompting Tatyana to seek guidance from human rights activists. After navigating a series of challenges, including obtaining false documents, they made their way to Lithuania, where they faced further legal issues due to the forged passport.

Now housed in an asylum seeker shelter, Sergei and Tatyana await a new life in Lithuania, having received support from the Ukrainian army. Their courageous actions have strained family relationships, particularly with their son who resides in Russia and disapproves of their choices. Yet, the Voronkovs remain resolute in their decision to never return to Russia, seeking only a humane future.
