On Tuesday, a student at Ateneo de Zamboanga junior high in southern Philippines was shot dead by a fellow student who later took his own life.
The alleged shooter managed to sneak a .45‑calibre pistol into a classroom, first firing at a teacher who was seated at a table but missing; he then moved to another room where he shot a student who later died.
Local media circulated livestream footage that appeared to come from the shooter’s perspective, showing a gun barrel moving down the hallway.
The police confirmed the situation was under control with no more active shooters. This is the second shooting in the Philippines within two months; the first, in Tacloban City, left three students dead and over twenty wounded.
Authorities are investigating links between violent online games and teen gun violence, citing that one of the shooters in the earlier incident regularly played a banned game called “Gorebox”.
