On Saturday, a five‑storey hostel in the Satya Niketan neighbourhood of south‑west Delhi collapsed, sending debris onto the streets and trapping dozens of students. Rescue crews, including the National Disaster Response Force, raced to dig free those beneath the rubble, while authorities linked the collapse to weak foundations and construction work on a lease. The Delhi government launched investigations and urged better safety standards for student housing. With over a thousand building collapses recorded in Delhi’s past three years, the incident highlights ongoing infrastructure challenges. Meanwhile, the city grapples with ensuring safe housing for its large student population.

A five‑storey hostel in the Satya Niketan neighbourhood of south‑west Delhi collapsed on Sunday at about 08:00 GMT, sending debris into the streets and leaving dozens of students trapped beneath the rubble.

Eyewitnesses report that as many as 50 people were inside the building when it fell. At least three people were killed and three others were reported in critical condition. Police have rescued roughly eight people so far.

Construction was underway in the basement of the hostel, which had been a short distance from the Delhi University campus. The collapse is linked to weakening foundations, with the owner of a nearby shop saying construction workers had been buried in the basement as they tried to expand the hostel.

The Delhi government, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, declared a precautionary evacuation for an adjacent hostel and said every effort is being made to safely rescue those trapped. Delhi Police noted the building was only 40–50 years old, and the National Students’ Union of India called for a thorough investigation and accountability for negligence.

Building collapses have become common in Delhi, with more than a thousand recorded in the past three years, often due to poor foundations, inadequate materials and unqualified construction workers. The incident adds to the city’s ongoing struggle with infrastructure safety.
