In brief

In Mayaky, a small town in Ukraine’s Odesa region, a drone slammed into the roof of Tavria supermarket, causing an explosion that injured three shoppers. President Volodymyr Zelensky has blamed Russia for the attack, marking fifth‑year war tensions. The incident showcases the growing use of drones in Ukraine’s conflict and underscores the escalating danger to civilians.

A small drone burst through the roof of Tavria supermarket in the town of Mayaky, part of Ukraine’s Odesa region, and exploded on impact. The crash left three people injured.

President Volodymyr Zelensky‑hoped on TV that Russia was behind the strike, calling it a “clear act of aggression.” This is one of many drone‑based attacks that have defined the ongoing war, now in its fifth year.

While the supermarket’s roof was heavily damaged, the blast made a rattle that could have caused even more harm had there been more people inside. Emergency services rushed to the scene and all three injured were treated on site.

Drone attacks are becoming a key part of the conflict, with each side using unmanned aircraft to target infrastructure and sow fear. The Odesa region has seen multiple drone incidents this year, raising questions about how civilian areas can stay safe.

Following the incident, local authorities increased security measures around the supermarket and issued a warning to residents to stay away from the area until repairs are completed.
