In a hopeful address on renewable energy, U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized that the shift from fossil fuels to cleaner energy sources is “unstoppable.” However, he criticized the U.S. for undermining this progress with its policies, specifically calling out former President Trump’s decision to withdraw from key international climate agreements and the administration's support for fossil fuel industries at the expense of renewable energy sectors like wind and solar power.

Guterres warned that the U.S. is “missing the greatest economic opportunity of the 21st century” due to these “clear market distortions.” He pointed to the fact that fossil fuels receive nine times the subsidies compared to clean energy, undermining environmental progress.

Despite these challenges, Guterres expressed confidence that humanity will prevail in the fight against climate change, saying we’ve reached a “point of no return.” He believes that economic forces will ultimately drive the necessary changes, urging everyone to "follow the money" to see the way forward.
