In brief
Eswin Mejia, an immigrant accused of a tragic vehicular incident, is set to face U.S. authorities.
Honduran officials announced the initiation of the extradition process for Eswin Mejia, an undocumented immigrant wanted in connection to the 2016 death of Iowa woman Sarah Root. Mejia is thought to have been driving under the influence when he crashed into Root’s vehicle at a stoplight in Omaha. Following his release on bond, he fled to Honduras, but was arrested last Thursday near Tegucigalpa. The Honduran Supreme Court is now reviewing the extradition request made by the United States, reflecting the ongoing cooperation between Honduras and the U.S. under President Xiomara Castro’s administration. Over 50 similar extradition requests have been submitted since she took office in 2022, according to Foreign Minister Enrique Reina. The case initially gained attention during Donald Trump's first presidential campaign, highlighting immigration issues in U.S. politics.
