In brief

Over the weekend, nearly 30 wildfires erupted in southeastern South Korea, claiming the lives of four individuals and injuring six others. According to officials, approximately 4,700 acres were scorched, forcing 1,000 residents to evacuate. A swift response saw thousands of firefighters and numerous helicopters deployed to combat the flames. By Sunday, only six of the 29 fires remained active, while a state of disaster was declared in the affected areas.

The most deadly fire originated in Sancheong County on Friday when a farmer's lawn mower ignited dry grass. Tragically, two of the deceased were firefighters. The government reported that five of the six injured individuals sustained serious injuries. Other fires sparked in different locations, including Euiseong County and Gimhae, further complicating rescue efforts. With the region experiencing dry and windy conditions typical for March, the Korea Meteorological Administration noted that these factors contributed to the rapid spread of the wildfires. Local authorities are optimistic about containing the remaining fires soon, but residents and officials are on high alert as they navigate the aftermath of this natural disaster.
