Police in Egypt have taken two men into custody after a viral scam using fake judges convinced hundreds of citizens they could get housing from government agencies. The Ministry of Interior said the plot involved staged courtroom scenes on social media, with suspects wearing forged judicial sashes.
One suspect, an unemployed man from Cairo, claimed to have worked for a judicial authority, while the other, a student in Giza, helped film and publish the videos that were shared widely.
Police seized a firearm, fake judicial sash, and identity cards bearing the incriminated titles. The suspects confessed to taking money from citizens and creating fake court footage to boost credibility.
Court employees were also detained and questioned, reporting that the scam had involved several staff members. The case underscores rising online fraud cases in Egypt, prompting authorities to tighten monitoring of social media rumors and deceptive operations.
