In brief
Israeli forces have targeted key energy sites in Iran, causing massive fires and drawing global attention to the increasing military tensions.
Across Tehran, flames and smoke rose into the sky early Sunday after Israel targeted two crucial energy facilities: the Shahran gas depot and a major oil refinery in Shahr Rey. The assault represents a striking escalation in Israel's military actions against Iran, which have notably intensified in recent days. According to Iran’s oil ministry, the Shahran depot, located in a wealthier area known for its luxury high rises, was hit during a series of attacks that began the previous night, inciting alarm among residents. “The fire is terrifying... there’s a lot of commotion here,” said Mostafa Shams, who lives nearby. Reports indicate that explosive sounds resonated as tanks ignited one after the other. The oil refinery in Shahr Rey was also targeted, with local media highlighting the challenge faced by emergency crews working to contain the flames. “I can see the flames from miles away,” stated Reza Salehi, a Tehran resident. The strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure are significant, impacting the country’s export revenues and domestic energy supplies—vital components for Iran’s economy. Just a day earlier, Israel had also attacked the South Pars Gas Field, adding to the scrutiny surrounding the fragile political climate in the region.
