NEW YORK (AP) — Former New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced Friday that he is now a citizen of Albania, bringing him closer to his desire for a life away from politics.

Adams, a Democrat, received honorary citizenship ‘at his request’ from Albanian President Bajram Begaj. His ties to the Albanian community run deep, and a spokesperson revealed that his recognition enhances the bond between New York and Albania.

Adams has previously described himself as an ‘international mayor’ and has a personal connection to Albania, with his son having lived there while competing in the local rendition of 'American Idol.'

Though it remains unclear what he intends to do with this new citizenship, Adams has openly shared his wish to settle far from New York City in the future. His global travels, work with the Albanian-American community, and ambition to engage with international organizations hint at a new chapter ahead.
