French Tourist Dies in Death Valley After Car Gets Stuck in Mud

A 68‑year‑old French tourist, Pierre Michel Formosa, lost his life after a vehicle broke down in the blistering heat of Death Valley.

After his car became stuck in mud on West Side Road, Formosa and his companion tried to find help by walking across the salt flats. The heat, at 46.6 °C (116 °F), forced the 68‑year‑old to abandon the journey after covering about 1.3 miles.

Police and rangers later found Formosa that afternoon; he was pronounced dead on arrival. Rangers emphasized that Death Valley’s remoteness and scorching temperatures can be dangerous even for experienced travelers.
