In brief
The United Nations has called for an investigation into reports of India deporting Rohingya refugees in inhumane conditions, such as pushing them into the sea. This unfortunate event is linked to broader governmental crackdowns on Muslims amidst rising tensions with neighboring Pakistan.
Reports have emerged accusing Indian authorities of inhumanely deporting Rohingya refugees, prompting a strong reaction from the United Nations. Allegations include that some refugees were forcibly placed into the Andaman Sea, just off the coast of Myanmar, where they fled to escape persecution. Tom Andrews, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar, described the situation as "outrageous" and is calling for details on these events. He urged the Indian government to stop the "inhumane treatment" of refugees and to avoid returning them to dangerous situations in Myanmar. Amid escalating tensions with Pakistan due to a recent terror attack, Indian officials have ramped up their crackdown on minority Muslims. Thousands of individuals, perceived as illegal migrants from Muslim-majority regions like Bangladesh or Pakistan, have been targeted, especially in the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan.
