In brief
In a significant move, Jordan’s Interior Ministry announced a complete ban on the activities of the Islamist group, the Muslim Brotherhood. This decision follows the recent arrests of 16 individuals accused of plotting security threats, allegedly linked to the group. Interior Minister Mazin Al Farrayeh stated that those connected to the Brotherhood were found to be engaging in activities that threaten national stability. He highlighted the discovery of explosives and a plan to manufacture weapons.
Jordan has been moving towards disbanding the Brotherhood since a 2020 court decision and previously closed the group’s headquarters in Amman in 2016. It remains uncertain how this new ban will influence the Islamic Action Front, the Brotherhood's political arm, which currently holds a notable presence in the parliament, advocating against the Israeli invasion of Gaza. As tensions regarding national security rise, this crackdown could reshape Jordan's political landscape and its approach toward Islamist groups.
