In brief

On December 9, 2021, a devastating truck accident claimed the lives of more than 50 migrants, leading to recent arrests connected to a human trafficking ring.

In a significant operation on Monday, authorities from the U.S. and Guatemala arrested six individuals believed to be connected to a deadly traffic accident that resulted in the deaths of over 50 migrants in December 2021. This tragic event took place when a truck carrying around 160 migrants overturned on a sharp turn in southern Mexico, near the capital of Chiapas, Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Reports indicated that the truck was speeding when it veered off course, crashing into a pedestrian bridge and nearby construction, leading to the loss of life and injuries for over 100 people, many of whom were from Guatemala. On the three-year anniversary of the accident, U.S. prosecutors announced that four Guatemalans were arrested in their home country, part of a reported human smuggling network. Those apprehended include Tomas Quino Canil, Alberto Marcario Chitic, Oswaldo Manuel Zavala Quino, and Josefa Quino Canil De Zavala. Additionally, Jorge Agapito Ventura was arrested at his residence in Cleveland, Texas. The individuals have been indicted for conspiracy to smuggle undocumented migrants into the U.S. and for putting them in dangerous situations that have led to serious injury or death. One more individual was also detained, but their name remains undisclosed in the unsealed indictment.
